Support HB81- Flouride Amendments

​This bill proposes significant changes to Utah’s approach to fluoride in drinking water. If passed, it will prohibit the addition of fluoride to public water systems while allowing pharmacists to prescribe fluoride supplements for those who want them.

Key Changes

• Fluoride Removed from Public Water Systems
  • ​Cities and counties cannot require or permit fluoride to be added to drinking water.
  • Any existing fluoridation programs will be discontinued.
• Fluoride Available by Prescription
  • Instead of being added to water, fluoride will be available through a pharmacist’s prescription.
  • The Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) will establish guidelines for safe prescribing.
• Repealed Provisions
  • Previous laws that allowed residents to request fluoridated water or provided fluoride in emergency situations will be removed.​

This legislation shifts the decision about fluoride from a community-wide approach to an individual/parent choice, ensuring those who want fluoride can still access it, while others won’t have it automatically added to their water.
