SEL:  5 Questions to ask & Previewing the Curriculum

Because SEL is Experimental --> SEL should be opt-in
These conversations you are having with educators is a great time to share your viewpoint with them.
5 Questions to ask educators:
  1. Which KIDS? How do you determine which children require school assistance to help deal socially and emotionally with life?
  2. Which ISSUES? Which specific issues are you targeting with an SEL curriculum? What are the goals? Who and how will you evaluate? Whose values are being used to set goals and measure outcomes?
  3. Which BENEFITS? What are the specific benefits of SEL?Do you have any peer-reviewed research to back it up?Who and how will you determine if those benefits are occurring?
  4. Which PROGRAM? Who developed the SEL program you are using? Is there peer-reviewed research to back it up?
  5. Whose MONEY? Are you receiving money for SEL programs?How much did you receive? Where did it come from?
7 Suggestions for Parental Rights Advocates by Gary Thompson, Doctor of Clinical Psychology
  • Always keep your coolLaugh at gas-lighting attempts (ie, “You’re a hater.”)
  • Keep it simple and principle based (ie “Informed consent for experimentation”)
  • Follow the money and the power.
  • Review direct source materials.
  • Review materials with an open mind - A broken clock is right twice a day.Self-care.
  • Find something bigger than you (God/nature) to commune and heal with.
Why did I opt out my fourth grader from the SEL program?
I reviewed the materials in the LIFE Skills Training program and noticed that family and parents were not presented as a help or benefit to the child. They were rarely mentioned and when they were it was as an influencer who could manipulate, or in an exercise that mentioned a troubled home.
Nevertheless, the program seems to offer some good skills and opportunities for me to have conversations with my own kid. Therefore, I have asked the teacher if I could come in and teach the same lesson to my kid one-on-one so I could be the one creating relationship, teaching values and helping to fill in the “influencer” blanks on the worksheets with a vast support network of family and friends.
