Every public school in Utah has a Community Council
Every Community Council is voted on by the parents in the school community. The intent is that parents have a direct say in their child’s education. Parent members must exceed school employees by at least two members. Community Council information is to be published on your local school’s website including meetings, agendas and council members. The purpose of a community council as stated in Utah Code is to:
Involve parents of students in decision making at the school level
Improve the education of students
Prudently expend School LAND Trust Program money
Manage the State School Fund
Increase public awareness of educational excellence
A School Community Council shall advise and make recommendations on the below listed items:
The school and its programs
School district programs
A child access routing plan in accordance with Section 53G-4-402
Safe technology utilization and digital citizenship
Other issues relating to the community environment for students;
Work with students, families, and educators to develop and incorporate safety principles at the school
A school or school district administrator may not prohibit or discourage a school community council from discussing issues, or offering advice or recommendations, regarding the school and its programs, school district programs, the curriculum, or the community environment for students. Elections take place annually and according to Utah code, Utah State Board of Education rules and local district policies. Check your school website for more information on joining the school's community council.
